Synopsis
(from the original Broadway souvenir program)
Following the premiere of "Something for the Boys," metropolitan critics hastened to cheer the book which Dorothy and Herbert Fields had contribed
Here, they said, was something new in the way of musical comedies. Here was a show that played like a slam-bang farce.
"Something for the Boys" opens with an unusual prologue showing a lawyer visiting the oddly assorted Hart cousins - Blossom, Chiquita and Harry - one by one and telling them that they have inherited a share of a Texas ranch due to the death of an unknown uncle.
The cousins see each other for the first time in San Antonio where, during an Army Day celebration, Blossom Hart meets a handsome band leader, Lt. Rocky Fulton and his pal, Laddie. Later, the cousins visit their property which turns out to be a broken-down hacienda. Discouraged, they are about to leave when Army maneuvers bring the bandleader back into the picture with the suggestion that the old ranch house be transformed into a boarding house for wives of the soldiers stationed at nearby Kelly Field.
To support the project, the Harts install an assembly line and try to get government contracts for defense supplies. The bandleader's high society girlfriend, Melanie Walker, convinces the commanding officer at Kelly Field that the Harts are operating an establishment of questionable nature. The C.O. declares the project out-of-bounds.
Complications arise that verge on precipitating a Senate investigation; meanwhile, Blossom has discovered that she has become a human radio receiver and presents an ingenious gadget that would enable every soldier to receive radio signals on his teeth.
The climax occurs in a thrilling scene that takes place on board an army bomber high in the stratosphere where Blossom proves the worth of her invention, exonerates the trio of cousins, becomes a nationally famous figure and wins bandleader Rocky Fulton.
