42nd St. Moon is a non-profit corporation formed in 1993 by Greg MacKellan and Stephanie Rhoads to promote, preserve and perform classic American musical theatre. Currently in its fourth season, 42nd St. Moon has to date presented 21 "staged concerts" of rarely-performed musicals, three revues ( Once in a Blue Moon, Nobody's Heart: the lyrics of Lorenz Hart and The Song Is You: , the lyrics of Oscar Hammerstein II) and four fund -raising concerts. Among the shows which 42nd St. Moon has staged in concert have been several (including Irving Berlin's As Thousands Cheer , George S. Kaufman's Hollywood Pinafore and Rodgers and Hart's Peggy-Ann ) which had not been seen since their Broadway Premieres (in some cases more than sixty years ago). Last year the group presented the American premiere of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein's 1934 London musical Three Sisters . For the Hoytt Theatre of the Osher Marin Jewish Community Center, the group has produced two centenary celebrations -- saluting the lyrics of Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein II in 1995, and E. Y. "Yip" Harburg in 1996. This year, the group was awarded a special Bay Area Critics Award and the Bay Guardian's "Best of the Bay" citation.
