Opening the season will be DO I HEAR A WALTZ?, one of Stephen Sondheim's earliest efforts, a 1965 hit originally starring Elizabeth Allen and Carol Bruce, as well as Sergio Franchi. Marsha Mercant, Kelly Ground, and Joe Giuffre star for 42nd Street Moon.
Girl Crazy Aug. 5 - Aug. 23 After a summer interlude, 42nd Street Moon returns with a truly delicious classic which made stars of Ginger Rogers and Ethel Merman: GIRL CRAZY, George and Ira Gershwin's 1930 musical smash for which was written the immortal hits "I Got Rhythm," "Embraceable You," "But Not For Me," and "Biding My Time" as well as numerous other well-loved tunes. GIRL CRAZY will feature Dyan McBride (SILK STOCKINGS, GOODTIME CHARLEY, FACE THE MUSIC, THE NIGHT BOAT) in the Ginger Rogers role.
Redhead Sept. 2 - Sept. 20 As part of the DELICIOUS DAMES OF BROADWAY! celebration, 42nd Street Moon will present two shows with lyrics by the great Dorothy Fields. The first, in September, will be an unusual murder-mystery comic musical, REDHEAD. Written in 1959 with music by Albert Hague and lyrics by Dorothy Fields, the score contains the beautiful "Look Who's In Love" and the hilarious ""Erbie Fitch's Twitch," among other songs. Although originally written for Beatrice Lillie, the show starred Gwen Verdon as a young woman working in a London waxworks who has visions of a killer stalking actresses in Victorian London. REDHEAD won seven Tony awards, including Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Actress for Verdon (her fourth Tony).
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
Sept. 30 - Oct. 18
The second Fields classic will be A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN, based on the famous book and film of the same name. The stage musical, by George Abbott and Betty Smith, with score by Arthur Schwartz and Dorothy Fields, opened in 1951, and starred Shirley Booth. A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN follows the troubled marriage of a young man and woman in turn-of-the-century New York. Booth played the young woman's goodhearted but unrestrained cousin, Cissy. A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN, which includes the hit songs "Love Is The Reason" and "Make the Man Love Me,"
Nymph Errant Oct. 28 - Nov. 15 Fifth in the season will be NYMPH ERRANT, Cole Porter's racy 1933 musical about a young Englishwoman's worldwide search for romance and adventure ... not to mention earthly pleasures. Originally starring Gertrude Lawrence, NYMPH ERRANT was only produced in London; the sole American production to date was not mounted until the early 1980s. This saucy musical, featuring the songs "Experiment," "It's Bad For Me," and "The Physician,"
Call Me Madam Nov. 25 - Dec. 20 The closing show of the DELICIOUS DAMES OF BROADWAY! season will be Irving Berlin's CALL ME MADAM, a naughty satire of Washington politics in which a socialite party-giver becomes an ambassador. Local cabaret star Meg Mackay will perform the role of Mrs. Sally Adams, originally played by Ethel Merman; Mackay has been seen in previous 42nd Street Moon productions of SOMETHING FOR THE BOYS and ROBERTA. The plucky Berlin score includes "You're Just In Love," "It's a Lovely Day Today" and "Hostess with the Mostes"."
